Easy to get going

I needed a vector database for a personal project, nothing too serious. Ended up trying out Pinecone. Their Python Client was super easy to use, just plugged it right into my code. The documentation was pretty clear, which helped a lot. It took 3 days for my initial setup, but I was learning as I went. Overall, it was a smooth experience.

Reliable, minor console issue

I've been using Pinecone for a while now, primarily for its Hybrid Search capabilities. The performance has been consistently good, and the API is very robust. Data ingestion through the Python Client worked well for my needs. My only minor gripe was with the Pinecone Console; sometimes it felt a bit slow to load metrics, but it never impacted the database's actual performance. Overall, it's a solid product and has met my expectations for a managed vector database.

Solid value with free tier

As a first-time user, I was looking for the most cost-effective way to get started with a vector database. The free tier credits offered by Pinecone were a big draw for me. It allowed me to experiment with the Pinecone Pod-based Index without any immediate financial commitment. I felt it was a great way to evaluate the service before considering a paid plan. The value for money, especially starting out, felt very good.

Any word on security? Like, is Pinecone SOC2 compliant or anything like that?

C Colin E. 1 month ago
Yes, they are SOC2 compliant. It's listed in their general FAQs, so you can be pretty confident about that aspect.

B Brett 1 month ago
They also mention HIPAA compliance, so they're definitely thinking about data security and regulatory stuff.

If I go over my credit limit, what happens? Does my application just stop working?

A Alex C. 1 month ago
I think they usually give you a heads-up before you hit the limit, so you can upgrade or top up. It's not usually an instant cutoff, but definitely don't let it run dry.

A Anna 1 month ago
From my experience, they'll notify you. You'd probably want to upgrade your plan or add more credits to avoid any service interruption. It's better to manage it proactively.

Hey, wondering if anyone knows how to get some free credits for Pinecone? Just starting out and trying to keep costs down.

O Omar Z. 2 months ago
Yeah, they have a pretty solid free tier, like a permanent starter index. You don't even need a code for that, it's just there when you sign up.

Plus sometimes they do these promo codes through partner stuff or startup accelerators. Keep an eye out for those, you can usually apply them in the billing console.

How does pricing work? Do they charge for storing data or is it more about queries?

L Laura Nguyen 2 months ago
It's a bit of both, from what I understand. They charge for the resources your indexes consume (storage and compute) and also for operations/queries. It's usage-based.
5
C Carly Kim 2 months ago
Yeah, it's not just storage. The number of vectors, dimensions, and your query volume all factor in. Best to check their pricing page to get a better idea for your specific use case.

Does Pinecone offer annual billing discounts? Trying to save some money for a yearly commitment.

C Colin Patel 1 month ago
Yes, for enterprise commitments, there's usually a 20% saving if you go with annual billing. Not sure about smaller plans, but worth asking.
6
I Ivy Torres 1 month ago
I think I saw that 20% discount for annual plans too, specifically for enterprise. Might apply to other tiers, but best to check with them directly.

Thinking of switching to Pinecone for my project. Is it really that much better than Milvus or Weaviate for most use cases?

R Rosa 1 month ago
I found Pinecone easier to get started with, especially with their SDKs. The managed service aspect is a huge plus compared to self-hosting Milvus.
5
C Cody Doyle 1 month ago
It really depends on your needs. For pure scale and managed service, Pinecone is great. Weaviate is also good, but I feel Pinecone's query performance is a bit snappier for complex similarity searches.

What's the main difference between Serverless and Pod-based Pinecone? Trying to figure out which one makes more sense for my app.

L Lisa 2 months ago
Serverless is generally easier to manage and scales automatically. Pod-based gives you more control and predictability if you have very specific performance or cost requirements.
6
N Nick C. 2 months ago
Serverless is better for variable workloads or if you just want to focus on development without worrying about infra. Pods are more if you know your usage patterns and want to optimize for that, maybe for larger, stable deployments.

Is there a way to get a discount if I'm planning to use Pinecone for an educational project or a non-profit?

G Greg P. 1 month ago
I heard they have educational and non-profit discounts. You probably have to contact their sales or support to see about getting that set up.
1
P Paula Reyes 1 month ago
Yeah, they mention those in their deal patterns, so it's definitely worth asking. Doesn't hurt to try!
